Ego: Not worth leaving things for

The ego is not who you really are. The ego is your self-image; it is your social mask; it is the role you are playing. Your social mask thrives on approval. It wants control, and it is sustained by power, because it lives in fear. Life is too short for ego to get in the way and take everything away from you.

‘I’ll not call him first’; ’it was her mistake, why should I say sorry to her first’ these are some of the most common phrases that we use or listen every day in our lives. The conflict that we feel inside ourselves of why we should do things first has become so common that instead of doing something about it and saving the relationship we prefer to keep numb and let our ego destroy what could have been a loving bond. Maintaining high ego is more important for people than saving their relation. For an individual inflated ego is so imperative that saying sorry and finishing the argument becomes very difficult for them, instead they prefer to avoid the other person and cut that person off from their life. It’s not just in case of argument but normally also people think why should they start a conversation first, instead of starting a conversation first, they wait for other person to talk first and in the whole process lot of time is lost and so is the need to maintain that relationship. If a person keeps aside his ego and tries to make amends then that person is labelled as desperate or wretched. What people fail to understand is that nothing can make ego happy, it just makes us go further from our loved ones and we don’t even realize it until we lose everything we care most about. If only a person can keep aside his ego and just talk then he can get a lot of things done. Ego doesn’t just affect relations but it also affects our capability to understand things.  If ego gets too big, out of control, then it certainly destroys relations. Whether it’s your relationship with your life partner, with your parents or siblings, with your friends, or with your colleagues, it doesn’t matter. The result will be falling out unless you make some changes.

Ego is our identity, an identity that we create ourselves. Taking into account all of our beliefs regarding our personality, capabilities, talents, failures, incapability, etc. makes up our ego. As such, the ego is considered to be a false identity. It does not truly define who and what we are. Don’t let ego come and way and destroy everything around you. Life is too short for ego to get in the way and take everything away from you.
